For a functional daily life? An engineer will give you way more mileage to be frank. For every bad engineer, there are those that are pretty important for everyday modern marvels.

To investigate what plagues human curiosity? To be honest, the fact that only mathematicians and scientists are devoted enough to learn how to do this is the reason why anyone gives them attention. My own interests align here, but one cannot actually understate the importance of applied science. Lots of people on 4chan claim that they can do it because they do its purer, research oriented counterpart. I mean, even if that were true (it's mostly not; doing applied science/engineering takes a different mind when examining our pool of knowledge. CS is notable because for high level applied work, a strong basis in lots of mathematical theory is important), the fact remains that these people are NOT doing it, so others need to step up and do so.

There's an overlap, sure, but the goals, skill set, and depth of knowledge between the two can be starkly different. An experimental physicist might also want to monetize a discovery/tool after making it, but they are primarily motivated based on discovery/understanding and usually have are far deeper knowledge than an engineer, that's what makes them an experimental physicist. Hell, even when it comes to invention like John Bardeen or those recent laureates for the blue LED, it really is in service to science and physics, even though they do end up capitalizing on their success.
