Most of you have probably heard of laszlo polgar.the guy who turned his three daughters into chess prodigies for fun. He is a firm believer in the fact that hard work makes a genius, not a genetic lottery. He believes that intense devotion makes geniuses, not luck.

However, that entails working extremely, autistically hard from the age of 2 or 3. For someone like me who is going to turn 19, that is crushing.

However, newton started studying math when he was 18. If polgar is correct, it was newtons famous intensity that led to his genius.

I cannot change my genes, but can I learn to work really hard?

A perspective shift can help. I recommend LSD or in your case shrooms (cos poorfag)

more than half of all fields medallists were imo medallists in their younger age. imo requires you to study like an autist from a young age.

take that as you will

Newton had very little education before he was 18 iirc.

Maybe his talent was not genius, but insane autism?

Born unfortunately.
If you didn't show signs of genius by the time you're a teenager you're probably never going to do anything great.
That's the sad reality. Even so, sometimes I wonder how smart the average person would be if they were exposed to super smart stuff at a young age.

It's mostly genetics. I don't think a single biologist would disagree. It wouldn't make sense for one's environment to mostly determine one's proficiencies and deficiencies -- there are geniuses, there are tards, and then everyone in between.

That said, studies have shown that proper nutrition and intellectual stimulation during key developmental stages can boost IQ, and a lack thereof can have have a detrimental effect.

i disagree. i don't know how true this is for stuff like research, but it's often the norm in math olympiad, chess, or even video games (seen in melee) where people's skill level simply stops improving after a certain point and they plateau because they're simply not 'prodigious' enough

Yeah academic success. But also doing stuff on your own like how Elon Musk designed a video game at 10 years old and sold it. Extracurriculars like spelling bees and whatnot count towards "signs of genius" as well.

I think it has more to do with the fact that he's been training them in that since they were very young (their key learning stage). It's been proven that children who grow up without being taught how to read or speak will never acquire those skills later on (or they will but to a very limited degree). So it makes sense to believe that if you were trained intensively at some skill in your early years you will have a massive edge over those who started training later on. Of course it's all speculation, I'm no researcher or neurobiologist.

Both, and both together, but more commonly genetically predisposed to being so.
Chess is not genius stuff. True genius is creativity. You can be creative within chess but it's not the same as other novelties.

https://terrytao.wordpress.com/career-advice/does-one-have-to-be-a-genius-to-do-maths/

The real question: does it matter? Tao brings up a good point; you shouldn’t be doing this for fame. If you love this subject with your heart and soul, you will contribute after a huge amount of hard work. A lot of your work is collaboration. Aim to be a good researcher, not a famous genius. Just take it slow, learn what you want thoroughly (without regard as to whether you are learning it the fastest), and carry on with your passions. Insight is born after staring at papers for a huge amount of time, but after a cursory glance and being struck with the lighting of eureka.
