If I help someone because their pain brings me pain, then I am doing it for myself instead of them. Empathy is flawed because uses character flaws. If I feel empathetic towards a school shooter because I have a similar outlook on life, I still cannot logically justify their actions. Don't get me wrong, I am not going to completely dismiss the effects the latter has, but it does require reasoning. If someone were wrongfully imprisoned and I knew that and could rationally explain why they were innocent, I still wouldn't be empathetic towards this person. Instead I would denouce the action as unjust and the system as flawed. My personal perspective on morality is not one that relies on social cohesion (that was just an example.)

This is bad how? Why is self interest immoral? Why does aligning self interest with group interest seem immoral to you? Consider sympathy and empathy biological tools to transmit emotions for better understanding of your fellow human.
