> economics
As someone who graduated in economics, I am truly upset by all the bullshit I spent four years digesting, only to see that everything is completely different in the real world. For example, remember when you learned about supply and demand and pricing equilibrium! Well that's bullshit! Total bullshit! Go to the produce market in Budapest, Hungary and you'll find a kilo of bananas for 250 Forint, 280 Forint, and 300 Forint and all of these are walking distance from each other. And it's not just in the big produce market -- you can find shitty coffee at Starcucks for 1200 Forint, and a better coffee somewhere else for under one quarter the cost. You can find a bottle of Szentkirály sparkling water for 250 Forint, and the same bottle for 125 Forint within walking distance, or a 500 mL botte of Szentkirály sparkling water at the same price as the 1.5 L bottle.
If "people react to incentives", when was the last time you cut coupons in the super market to get the best price? Listen to the dilemma of the prisoners and the optimum outcome of betraying your partner in crime? Yeah, do it on the streets and you get a reputation as a snitch and they slaughter your whole family. But hey, according to economists, betraying the fellow prisoner is the optimal result! Economics is what the overwhelming old white people think the real world is working because it is so logical. But the real world has so many variables in the game that you can not just draw a graph and where pruning meets market equilibrium. As if the minimum wage price is a price floor and a bad economy, why is the minimum wage needed to secure workers, the economy and people closer to viable pay?

I would highly recommend once you get there to go to the advising office in the Physics department and talk with some professors, try and decide which one you like best.

9843293

Anyway should probably say what I'm doing attending Umich.

Second year student majoring in Electrical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics and Economics.

EE and maths are pretty much the only thing I'm dead-set on.

Econ I'm primarily doing for game theory and micro-economics theory, but more game theory.
Maths is something that I would like to major in, but god knows I don't want to deal with the language requirements fucking my scheduling.
EE I enjoy but I find the theoretical work a lot more intriguing, and I wish to focus pretty much entirely on research and theory when it comes to EE, same with Maths.

I find Maths the most intriguing out of everything, because now with the records in the library I've been able to effectively dive into the higher levels of maths, and be exposed to everything. I find my personal work tends to fall under analysis, so with my math minor I should probably focus on taking courses under analysis, but I'm far too curious about topics like number theory and abstract algebra to not warrant a self study.

I have self studied in the library with their books, but I feel it would be better if I were honest with myself and just fought for a maths major. The way I currently accommodate a love of maths in Engineering is by working more theoretical EE, but eventually the boat is gonna tip, I feel, and I will have to face either being or not being a maths major.

If you already know a non-English language you could get away with taking some test. I don't know how well that works because I'm in the College of Engineering

If you plan on taking that in the Community College check if the transfer credits work, so just talk with the relevant department.

I feel your pain though with the language requisites. Its the one thing, apart from scheduling, that is keeping me from just coming out of the closet and being a math major. I could probably bullshit the system and avert it because I know Finnish and French to varying levels.

Again, with the community college stuff it really depends on the validity of the transfer credits. Check with the department or, because you are an incoming freshman, talk with one of them, there's most likely contact information on the LSA website somewhere.

our physics department is actually really good and gets a decent amount of funding thanks to Dirac spending his final years here at FSU
we even have our own underground particle accelerator and some magnet laboratory thing iirc

I'm studying at a basic state school that I barely got into because my GPA was considerably low in high school. I didn't do any work at all, and was in critically poor condition for three years. For the fourth I pull out of it and became an impeccable student. In college I am easily top of my class and take time to help out my friends understand any topic better. I don't believe I could've made it into MIT because I'm no world wonder, but don't be held down by your environment, enrich it. Those who are embittered by their position are the ones who have reaped it. At least I use my position to elevate those around me.

Then that bumps you up one or two whole letters at the end of the semester. He also says you can just buy him a 911 turbo he'll give you an A.

I just think it has the most advanced curriculu,m at the best pace for an undergraduate. Compare:
http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/plans/2018/MATHP13956.html
http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/UG/SM/
The most advanced algebra UNSW do is a tiny bit of rings whereas we go straight up to Galois theory, our higher analysis subject also surpasses their "Higher Analysis" as we make it up to the beginnings of functional analysis.

Granted, USYD may not be the best research university for mathematics (though I've been told its the best for algebra, which is huge here), but I think its got an excellent curriculum.

I got a d+ the first time I took 166. I'm not sure what happened. When I re-took it I made a point at least a week before each exam to do two practice exams every day. Ended up being able to complete each actual test in about 15 minutes and never scored lower than a 95. So yeah, at least the lower level math courses are not as fearsome as their reputation merits. I think a lot of people just haven't adjusted to the college mindset of how to actually study yet.

Technically "was," now, since I graduated. I really liked the department, there were a lot of great professors. David Griffiths is still around and gives guest lectures. However, there's very little grade inflation, so be prepared for that. I was never bothered by how small the school was, because I chose it for that reason and I came from a smaller high school as well. Furthermore, having such a small school means every professor A. has time to meet with you to talk about stuff and B. gets to know you better. Plus the thesis process is very fun and rewarding.

Just finished up my first year in EE here. Went with them because they gave me a full ride while Purdue offered me $1,000 a year. But I'm an Indiana resident and my parents could've afforded it, so sometimes I wonder if I should've just gone ahead and went with them anyways.

That being said, I think I've done pretty well for myself so far. Made some decent friends, been pretty active with a design team, had a professor like me enough to ask me to write him a letter of recommendation, and landed a co-op this summer that I've been enjoying. So I might try and use the money my parents saved up for a Masters or something.

Oh yea I forgot that they are starting that now. In all honesty I'm not sure it matters TOO much where you go for undergraduate mathematics but I still think USYD would be good, you can pick up a Statistics major which will be useful or do Comp Sci to force yourself to learn some programming which is also useful. But if ALL you want to do is just pure mathematics then it doesn't really matter where you do undergrad as long as its at a big uni, the choice will be significant when it comes to doing your PhD. I think you should also ask some people from UNSW but if I were in your shoes I'd probably pick USYD still (but I'm biased). Good luck.

Your comment is worthy of a professionalism deduction. Your comment benefits no one, not even you. Making it doesn't change your grade, and it doesn't provide insights into the course content. Specifically, your comment is an example of interactions to avoid. At the beginning of the course, we awarded you 100% for the professionalism portion of your course grade assuming that all interactions would be professional. Your interaction above indicates that our initial prediction of your professionalism was incorrect. I've made an adjustment in your score to reflect the error in our assumptions. If you'd like to explain how your comment above demonstrates consideration, patience, and professionalism, please let me know.

The school has a top notch CS program with great industry connections. UCSD also has the SDSC which makes it a great school for students who want to specialize in data science or do research. The curriculum tends to be more theory centric. The student culture is a lot less competitive than at something like UCB. People are generally willing to assist one another but the social atmosphere is much colder than the typical university.
