Why is /sci/ so obsessed with maths? Why do you study maths? Brainlet here and i don't really understand.

do you want money?
Is it profitable?
you want to feel smart?
you want to be smart?

Autistic/hyper-male interest in things.

Just how they were born and molded by early childhood.

>Why is /sci/ so obsessed with maths? Why do you study maths?

Mathematics is the least biased instrument to understand the universe.
Mathematics is the most useful mental instrument we have for all of the sciences.

> do you want money?

Yes.

> Is it profitable?

Depends on how you apply math.

> you want to feel smart?
> you want to be smart?

Learning math won't make you smart.

Because I want to.

>do you want money?
Yes.

>Is it profitable?
No, but math has a sister degree with $300k starting. I think it's called Computer Science or something like that.

>you want to feel smart?
>you want to be smart?
You don't learn math to be smart. You learn math because you're smart.

This board is obsessed over turning academics and academia into a sport. It mostly has to do with the “cult of genius.” For them, mathematics is how they benchmark their “inherent” talent. If they got a bad grade, then they didn’t work hard; if anyone else does, it’s because they’re inherently not as intelligent (attribution is an interesting topic from psychology). /sci/ is a testament to how stupid undergraduate students can be, to how blinding pride can be, and to how petty and emphatically uninformed “academic types” can really be. This is a good read:

I got a bachelor's degree in math from a second-rate state college.
Now I make about 20K a year moving boxes of nuts and bolts part time!

Is lucky star now some hipster show? That's not really something you can bring up to feel superior. "Tch, don't talk to me about Bill Nye, I watch Japanese middle schoolers go about their lives."

None of these. I do it because I take pleasure in doing mathematics and I find it a very beautiful subject.

I think Erdos was a fantastic mathematician and fascinating guy (and I've had the privilege of having professors who have Erdos numbers under 5), but I also know that on some level, I do not and do not want to lead my life in that way. I like knowing how to drive, knowing how to cook a bit, and being inquisitive about other fields. I study math, but I also really love physics, so perhaps my interest isn't as pure as his was.
