Because a lot of humans see IQ as a status symbol.
Experiments reliably show men appear taller to women if they know the man has a degree or scored well on an IQ test. Where as men perceive men who they know have a higher IQ/more education as being short/runty looking, as a defensive social tacit. The same happens when you replace IQ tests/education with cars or how nice the guys house looks.

You're trying to make yourself appear higher up the social status ladder by bragging about how big your IQ is and how stupid everyone else is compared to you.

You could replace IQ with other things, dick size, guns owned, on /pol/ it would be how "white" you are, of course way back in the day it would be things like how many fish you caught if you lived in a fishing village or how many more crops you harvest than everyone else.
