Can I have a career in science being an autodidact? I'm particularly interested in genetics and I think it overlaps with my interesting in gardening. Or do I need to go back to skool?

qualifications are a requirement. so you can train yourself, but you will have to relearn the way they want you to learn. sorry.

Schools are fake anyway. They tell us to memorize all kinds of shit which we could just ask a computer for anyway.

I feel like this is the case if you are not a creative person.

you cannot build a career in in science without being involved in academia. being an autodidact cant get you much past "science as a hobby".

the father of Lorenzo, that researched and created Lorenzo's oil, was granted honours but is still regarded as an outsider. cases of people that havent got degrees from a university being employed for research, well i cant think of any. this doesnt mean you can't discover things on your own, but you did say career.

Well, good point. But I just really want to work on some breakthroughs or do freelance stuff.

without using the system's methods, they will pick it all to pieces. so if you do, make sure you play by their rules.

are you a monk by any chance?

Career means eating somebody's dumb shit, if you want that, kill yourself.

no ones going to hire you or fund you or work with you so you better be a fucking genius, which you're not.

I would go back to school for a Plant Biology degree. Plants are used extensively in genetics research for developing new crops that are resistant to various environments. You could aim for that.

In the current state of the life science, I don't think you can really be self taught in this day and age. Its way too much information and to have any technical skills for experiments you need the coursework. Typically labs aren't just going to trust anyone with the expensive equipment and reagents. Every time you fuck up an experiment, its costs a few hundred dollars.

You’ll still have to do a bunch of shit courses you don’t care about. If you do decide to do it make sure to pick a school that has actual genetics courses and plant biology. I took a plant genetics course and it was actually pretty amazing. A lot of students tend to avoid plants so it should be easier to get into it and arabidopsis is pretty cool and it has little cute cotyledons.

Maybe Mr. Shejbal, former biotechnologist, from Floriana Bulbose, could have a formed opinion on that.

It's pretty difficult to be objective when you have no perspective but your own.

I know someone who is autodidact with CS. I don’t think the materials are readily available to do this in other fields tho
