I'm pretty sure the despair came from him not being able to use his PhD in his career. Say what you will about industry jobs, but the PhD is supposed to help launch you into a research job.

This is one of the alumni from that university. It seems like this mathematician went off to do some interesting work.

I think that had this student stayed diligent, done some postdoc's, and had waited out the grind, he could have found some work
