Dumbest things you've ever heard ITT
We're talking evolution.
Me: "Humans are pretty much done evolving. We've taken natural selection out of the equation, so there's no much else that will change"
Guy: "That's not true! Eventually, we won't have to breathe oxygen or go the bathroom!"

>> No.977478

We're not "done" evolving. its just going to go ALOT slower now.

But, thats going to be made up for now by genetic manipulation

>> No.977475

hahahahahahahhahahaha

n o t f u n n y. considering i thought it was appropriate to the discussion at the time.

>> No.977504

on the flip side you're dumb too because we're not 'done evolving', unless we actively make some kind of technology that inhibits genetic mutations

>"Well, those species are isolated now. Breeding a jaguar and a lion won't create a new type of animal, nor do I think it's even possible for them to breed. You've heard of reproductive isolation, right?"

>"Oh yeah? Explain ligers, then."

>> No.977546

>>977520
Ligers are not viable offspring. They degenerate after a few generations. It's just like how mules are sterile in the first generation. Ligers just take a bit longer. Same thing.

he has a point. did you bother explaining that species are defined by the ability of producing <span class="math">fertile[/spoiler] offspring or anything like that?

Ligers are offspring of a lion and tiger, they where arguing about a jaguar and a lion reproducing, that's his point.

Your own comment is only very slightly less ignorant than his.

Evolutionary pressures are acting on us strongly today - some people have ten children, some people have none; you think that isn't significant?

i guess cultural evolution is more important now. We are able to make alot of changes within a couple of hundred years to the ecosystems.
take that mother nature.

That's not evolution; that's deevolution. It's directly contradictory to the benefit of the human race.
The people who have ten children are usually stupid, genetically deficient, etc.

in today's society, bad teeth and eyesight don't influence how likely you are to reproduce or survive

it's pretty frigging obvious what OP means

we've stopped evolving under the influence of standard natural selection factors; most of it from here on in is cultural, and it's gonna be slow

And he came back with "yea, but science is usually wrong!" I then asked how so? Expecting a remark about evolution or something. Nope this next sentence comes out his mouth. This, evolution doesn't stop. It can slow down, but as long as genetic mutations (as well as some other things that actual biologists are more knowledgeable about) are around it won't stop.
