CS is math applied towards industry, bastardized and instrumentalized the way that engineers like to do. But that's all of engineering. Engineers use all the useful results that mathematicians create and completely discard all but the most barebones theoretical framework behind it. Why? because engineers aren't really about producing truth, or understanding things. It all boils down to creating products to serve people.

If you actually want to be big brained you would study math. But do you really want that? Do you really want to sit around proving shit that nobody cares about except for a small intellectual elite?

First of all congratulations! However, my sister in law went to Berkeley and hated every second of it for CS. She got hired at Google after graduating and says that Berkeley CA is much more stressful than working for Google. So be warned.

As to why people here hate on CS it's a mix of things: most schools don't do CS properly (i.e. just low level programming), CS majors tend to be over confident and smug, and CS has become the mainstream STEM major.

No, you don't need to change majors. CS is a fantastic major. My wife is going to UCI for CS this fall.
