That particular Escher image is not an optical illusion. You could build it.
The impossible part is that the various figures each have a "personal" gravity. We couldn't do it even if we could generate gravity. The figures top-center stand at right angles even though they're adjacent.

Some Escher images ARE illusions. "Ascending and Descending" and the closed-loop waterfall are examples of the Penrose Triangle. They can be built "in solid" but only viewed from one particular angle.
