Poor bait, but at least you're not being super unreasonable by suggesting someone in their 20s would still be in university. haha, now that would be pathetic.

>How you did in high school
I was the smart but lazy meme through high school and it was not a good idea. Spent most class periods just texting/playing shitty phone games. Turned in homework in a few weeks late at best, but just aced tests and essays/projects or whatever the big points in the class were. Took most APs offered (11/14), because they were weighted as 5.0 for GPA instead of 4.0 and were still easy to sleep through. Did not take the english AP senior year as english was always my worse class due to being absolutely shit at public speaking and basically taking a C, D, or F on every speech/presentation. Also it was the AP Lit class and I have read maybe two chapter books to this day and felt I might actually have to read books to get a good grade. I did alright for myself still, but always regret those years to this day as I believe I could have done much more and get full ride scholarships instead of just full tuition to places if I spent my time better. Only main extracurricular was varsity football from sophomore year through senior year, but my shitty work ethic permeated throughout my entire life at the time and I spent little time in offseason training and wasn't really motivated to play in college and was content just being starter for the three years in HS.. Took only 3 actual AP tests as I didn't want to be assed to do them, 1 SAT and 2 ACT attempts "crammed" the night before. My stats were:
GPA: 4.4/4.0 (max, but no valedictorian)
ACT: 36 reading, 30 math (lol), 35 science, 33 english, second attempt got lower score for science but higher for math so evened out.
SAT: 2000? had a migraine and tried my best
CSAP: 3, WHAP: 5, USAP: 5, studied for CSAP and it did not help so did not bother for the other tests.

Don't do what I did kid lurkers and try your best, but also know that if you don't there are plenty of ways to climb out of your situation. My undergrad university isn't that bad, but is definitely not a top tier university (at least in EE undergrad). I focused more for undergrad and got into plenty of good (2 top 5, 3 top 20 out of 10 applications) grad schools with PhD stipend and tuition waivers. Don't worry about being in a small pond, focus on being the big fish of that pond and do whatever you can to reach your goal, legally and without cheating or whatever, and you will be fine. Don't let your short years in high school define or dictate the rest of your life.

I conveniently developed depression and an eating disorder during my time at uni, so my cGPA is sitting around a miserable 3.4. I've always been very active in lectures as well, and have gotten excellent paid research positions just by virtue of the fact that I made a good impression on my profs (asked/answered the right questions).

DESU I didn't really expect to get into any good schools. I was pretty much in a leadership role in every school club we had. Regularly set the precedent for years to come. Something like five/six different clubs with me as the lead. Also active in a few more where I wasn't. Active on a sports team. Perfect GPA, 1st in class, perfect ACT, etc etc.

My real downfall was that I'm from the middle of fucking nowhere. Even though I have written my own research papers, been as active as possible in the community etc, there just isnt ANYTHING to do here. No science olympiads, no nearby universities, nothing. I tried to get things implemented but there just was no take. Very conservative rural town. Not very many intelligent people. No one wanted any of that.

Pretty sure the only reason I got into Cornell is because I wrote an incredible essay pretty much describing all of that stuff. I wasn't too surprised to get rejected from Caltech, even though it hurt like a bitch. Spent four years working my ass off for that goal just for it to go nowhere. I didn't apply to MIT.

I'm happy though. Cornell has an incredibly rigorous UG physics program. I'd wager only Caltech beats it, and only a few more challenge it.

Computer Science + Mathematics double
4.0 in a top highschool, 35 ACT

Really good computer science program (take all the theory classes), good mathematics program (one of the analysis series is co-taught with a graduate course), although the math program is less funded so the classes are small, and the CS program is extremely competitive to get into (like 15% acceptance rate)

I fell in love with southern California after my REU in Los Angeles last summer. I want to go back. I plan on applying to almost every math PhD program in the UC system when I graduate. If I can't secure funding at any of those, I will fall back on UNL or UC Boulder.

The rankings differ based on sites of course, and my field (Optics, lasers, photonics) isn't exactly ranked well as it can be done through EE or physics typically, but I just applied for EE programs or optics program. Top 5 schools are UIUC and Stanford, also got into Boulder (top 5-20ish?), Rochester (top 10-20ish?), and Princeton (top 10-20ish) all for PhD. Also got into UNL for backup, as well as EPFL and ETH Zurich, great Swiss unis, for MS. Honestly did not expect to get into any universities for a PhD and was prepared to do an MS first due to not much research experience, but I guess my letters of rec must have been pretty good. Initially planned on ETH or EPFL, but did not get any funding and didn't want to use loans or anything. Settled on Rochester as there are many interesting professors to research with and the program is completely Optics, rather than being a subset of EE or Physics, so there is plenty to choose from honestly and the professors have a great reputation and connections throughout industry so getting a job in a govt or industry lab shouldn't be too difficult (don't want to be a professor right away, maybe later in life though). I also like that is smaller enrollment wise than something like UNL or UIUC and it is also close to Canada and traveling over there could be neat. How was your experience through the REU? If it went well and the main professor(s) liked you I think you should be able to get into a UC program. I had a semester and a half of research at the time of applying, all at UNL, and just put in plenty of work on SoP stuff, got strong letters of rec, and had good gpa/gre. My field is different though so maybe it won't be as easy for math PhD admissions? Good luck on your applications
