What is the best textbook for the history of all prehistoric life? Basically a chronological explanation of everything in the evolutionary tree, every main group and large leap in biological technology

Maybe not as "textbook-ish" as what you're looking for, but The Book of Life by Stephen Jay Gould is dope. Lots of images illustrating the major developments in plant and animal biology. Not super rigorous but comprehensive enough to be a great starting point for further reading.
