I don't know how it works in the US, but in Canada international students can pay up to 3-4x as much for tuition and are ineligible for provincial student assistance programs. Our universities are extremely dependent on foreign students' money and thus the system encourages pumping in as many foreigners as possible. As far as I can tell it's a scam.

This, actually. The extreme cultural pressure they are under to study the right thing, make their family look good, etc, creates just as much rampant cheating as it does incredibly hard workers. The students themselves end up miserable as they have no desire to be studying what they are studying, but they have no gumption to find their own path and are content to have their lives decided for them parents. It's sad. If it wasn't for the cheating and lack of honor that is commonplace I would feel sorry for them.

Befriend some 1st or 2nd generation immigrants who aren't actually in the STEM grinder themselves and who are doing other things. They will give you an interesting description of the culture their families are importing and impressing on them, their siblings/cousins, etc.

Sidenote, my coworker was complaining heavily about her family and often does. Parents, aunts/uncles/cousins and fully admits to obtaining and giving test answers to SATs and the likes for her cousins and family. Somehow she is completely deaf to the fact that she is culpable in their cheating and only uses those experiences to demonize her cousins. Very strange mindset.

What I have found is that textbooks in science and engineering written by French authors tend to have much more mathematical sophistication. Based on that, I suspect they are given a far more rigorous treatment of the subject compared to, say, the USA. This makes sense if you look at the developments that happened in France.

well I don't do math, but I've taken some math classes like Geometry and Topology, I really loved the classes they were so organised and simplified but in the exam the professor fucks you in the ass
if you just forget to add a ∀n before a proof, it's a 0 point even if the rest of the proof is right, and for the applied maths for physics it's also so fucking hard, we prepare every type of problems because we know that the professor will pick the hardest problem for the exam

so I would say the quality of math education+difficulty is what makes it good

They give the example of Ise Shrine in Japan. It's torn down and rebuilt every 20 years, and all the relics inside are destroyed and remade. Western historians see it as destruction of historical relics. The Japanese see it as "preserving the original". The logic seems to be that old dilapidated "preserved" relics are further from the true original than a properly-made replica. I'm not big into moral relativism, but when I read things like this it does make me pause and wonder if I actually see the world correctly or not.
