You should enroll in something (even if it's just a free online course). It will keep you focused and provide some pressure to pass the course.

In theory it's perfectly possible to pick up some books and study completely by yourself with no external structure/time limit, but it's difficult to stay motivated this way regardless of how smart you are.

Not OP but man this shit is way too complicated. Be honest it takes an IQ of 130 to internalize all this crazy math shit. I want to learn statistics and relearn algebra but what's the point if I'm just going to have to blindly memorize shit without understanding it.

FWIW, I tend to do my best by just opening a book with no structure/time limit and going for it. I aim for a certain amount a text / week but it’s more dynamic then static depending on the relative difficulty I’m having.

If you really want to learn it and/or are disciplined enough it’s ezpz.

Start with the Better Explained series, Khan Academy, PatrickJMT and YouTube in general. A good intro text is ‘Precalculus: A Prelude to Calculus’ by Axler because it contains worked out solutions, not magic answers. Another book to read in tandem with it is Courants ‘What is Mathematics?’.

After that pick up a calc book like Stewart’s, Lang’s or Thomas’s, or Spivak, Apostol, Courant or Puskinov if you’re feeling ballsy.

>>9655580
I did the first two chapters independently after finishing Stewart’s book that my school used.

Holy fuck it felt like Spivak took me out in the back and raped my virgin mathematical asshole. I was expecting ezpz review, but that book is solid. I’m not done yet but it’s certainly an excellent book to get comfortable with difficult problems and proofs. Comparitively, I feel like I didn’t learn a damn thing from Stewart and that I’m no better of a mathematician.

I’m also reading a couple linear algebra books, and they’re drastically easier than Spivak’s, so I know it will pay off.

>> No.9655623

>>9655619
And just to be clear, I did learn from Stewart (I did most of the exercises in each chapters after all) but only computation and it did not make me a better mathematician like Spivak is aiding in.

Because it's really saying that there exists an identity element with respect to the multiplicative operation, that is different from the identity with respect to the additive operation. "1" and "0" are just what those particular elements are called in this case.

this good advice for following what sort of structure / order and pace, but often picking the same text is far below optimal. Instructors pick text to lecture from, most often you won't have a lecturer for said book, or anyone to ask question. Just some criteria to keep in mind when planning your own course, I look for popular books like Spivak, Rudin, etc because the answers are all online with great explanations via stack exchange, I also love when I can pair a book with course notes / lectures / a MOOC, and lastly, and this is a big criteria, I really enjoy having a book with complete solutions (not just every odd numbered problem, and not just the end result).

I read stewart because my calc series required it for my school.

it was shit, but honestly for calculus I feel that's ok, it's largely just applied analysis anyway, so I can see where they are coming from. Unfortunately math classes are more appealing to the lowest common demographic these days, at leas the low level stuff. I'm of the belief that rigor should start in k-12

>> No.9660984

1 and 0 don't refer to numbers in this context, but to identity elements with respect to the multiplication and addition operations respectively
there are fields in which the additive and multiplicative identities are the same; for example [math]\mathbb{Z}/_1\mathbb{Z}[/math]

Why? These are ordered field axioms, btw. There's not really 'more'... But if you're interest is in brief and compact math notes, check http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/

And if you expect to use the pic you asked for more of, you need to do exercises and problems. The pic is from Spivak's "Calculus", with course notes here: http://math.uga.edu/~pete/2400full.pdf.. The first two chapter's have a lot of difficult problems using said axioms, with an answer book available libgen.

This is a very common response to these types of questions but..

Khan Acadamy.

You'll get a year's worth of material from highschool in just about a month, well that's how it was for me back then.

Just keep practicing every test until you hit 100% on each one. Then you'll know you're ready to move on. Khan is also very easy to understand. The math subjects are also very nicely categorized.

I'm not trying to suck Khan Academy's dick or anything but, they really helped me out in the past. Just fucking try it man.
