I suppose it makes sense if you are going through a graduate program.
For instance, I plan on getting a doctorate in medical physics, but along the way I will have a lot of elective courses to take. After I finish the undergraduate portion, I will be 2 or 3 math courses away from having a minor in mathematics. So, 7-ish years after that would be plenty of time to just get the major for it as well. The program director told me as a physicist, the more math the better.

No theyre not. All science is interdisciplinary at this point. If your uni isnt telling you to AT LEAST get a minor then they arent worth going to. My uni doesnt allow single math or stats majors anymore, you have to double major for those degrees. CS will be the next for required double major

of course science is interdisciplinary and shit and I'm not saying you shouldn't study multiple areas but you don't need to major in a thing to study it. you get a major in one field to show people you can, then go get a phd to show you can even better, then you start researching shit. multiple majors (or even worse multiple phds) is just wasting your time.

I definitely agree. You don't have to major in something to also study it. I think it makes sense to get another major as a consequence of you studying more of that subject matter on the side. So, I'm not getting a minor or major in math just because, I'm getting it because I will be studying that much more into mathematics as my elective courses to help with my journey through grad school. The minor/major is just a consequence of that.
