hey sci i've a question
so i was watching the third matrix just for the hell of it, and i noticed the turrets their central tower. They caught my attention as they had to points of rotation and were shooting the fuck out of the sentinels. I was curious though, i've never seen a picture of a turret like machine that worked the same way.

I thought about it briefly and came to the conclusion that building a scaled down model might be do-able (for someone with my knowledge and resources). The mechanics seem fairly straightforward, however the electronics involved are WAY over my head.

I was thinking of controlling this via USB, so i was wondering if anyone here had any experience with designing shit that's controlled through a USB connection or how one might wire the motors. Any information or leads to resources of information would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

oh christ, im sorry for the horrific grammar, im rather tired and it really shows...

Grab a pic18F4550. Set up HID interface. Grab some servos, set up PWM control.

What are these things?

If you can program an Arduino should be able to do it or a PIC but PICs are fiddly.

HID = Human Interface Device = A generic communication protocol for USB plug and play devices.

PWM = Pulse Width Modulation = How to control servo motors.

tell me 0.0 i want to hear what you've to say

i agree, dunno what these are, however i'm googling them. if peeps don't mind explaining them, that'd be pretty magical..

what do you mean you've never seen a picture of a turret that worked the same way?

er, I meant i've never seen one irl. Like, i've seen this. This is a screen shot from the movie, but I meant i've never seen a picture (or video) of one of these that was legit

they got those

yeah i suppose so. that's a turret all right. I'm going for aesthetics here though. not so much actually shooting anything... so i'm aiming to make something very similar to the design in the picture.
the turrets on naval ships are the closest thing's i've seen to this. and they are very interesting, however, they're extremely large.. and don't look very badass. or, at least as badass as the one in the picture there

You don't need to program anything. You can buy off-the-shelf USB servo controllers.

Why would anyone use a DC motor for this application? It clearly calls for a stepper.
