9631994 No.9631994 [Reply] [Original]

>Be me, PhD student
>Writing paper for a journal about some research I’ve recently done with my supervisors
>Some of the data is exponential, plot it on a graph where the vertical axis has a log scale so that the exponential relationship can be easily verified
>Supervisors completely baffled
>”Why did you plot it as a straight line if it’s exponential?”
>Spend the next hour trying to explain about log scales and exponential functions to them
>”Anon, you should plot it as an exponential curve, it’s not linear”

It kind of isn't just a surface level thing. Whether his superior wants to or not he is demonstrating to Anon that he is dismissing him until later, he could have said "Alright" or something more affirmative. However, if done intentionally then yes it is a power move done by superiors to relocate their subordinates to a position of inferiority and keep them in check.

um. well. whats your situation? year? funding, etc. ill list some ideas

1 When you can bring in funding on your own
2 If you apply for a different program and get in
3 If youre the last one left and your advisor needs your help on something
4 If you talk to another advisor and get accepted into their research group

You could complain to the department or school about him. Is there anything unethical or illegal he's done?

People like him are incredibly hard to deal with. Ive dealt with more than one, including my parents. The problem is its basically impossible to get them to cool down/back off since they feel the need for aggressive control and take everything as a personal attack.

But idk how bad your prof is. Id have to know more. He may later snub you of credit for research or something

This is why I only work with chinese, female or hippie advisors. Theyre there to genuinely help you learn and arent power hungry and they always know their shit. Even better when theyre interested in education research in their field

>"anon, how will you measure those errors?"
>"as I explained, those errors are concepts"
