The Simulation Theory sounds very scientific and all but I'm frankly too illiterate to be able to judge it well. Is it pseudo-scientific hogwash or is there actually some intelligence to it?

It's not a theory.

It's just intelligent design with an extra step.

Its really only relevant if we create human-like AI. If we do that then we're screwed.

It's all based on the premise that computing power and the sophistication of programs will develop to the point that we can simulate universes. From there it's short logical steps to the conclusion. But that initial jump is immense and probably vastly underestimated. Sort of like the hype over automation with automated cars and trucks which are always just five years away and never seem to materialize. Experts predicted it would happen so everyone assumes it will, but no one was really honest about the size of the hurdles to overcome.

I mean I know they exist now, but they can't replace human driven cars en masse as they exist now, so the automation crisis that's being predicted isn't guaranteed to occur.

If it was a PERFECT simulation, it'd be impossible to prove or disprove.
But it's hard to think of why anyone would bother doing so, right down to making the "inhabitants" of the simulation so complex that they could wonder about such things.

It's a "high tech" equivalent of the Fundamentalist believe that the world is only 6000 years old. If you point out fossils, radioactive dating, the starlight which has been on its way from other galaxies for billions of years -- in short, all the evidence the cosmos has been around for a very very long time -- they'll either question the facts or explain that the universe was CREATED with all that false data "planted" to delude us.
A god with such a perverted, deceitful mindset wouldn't be worthy of worship.
Similarly, you have to question why anyone would get kicks of out deceiving the "inhabitants" of a computer program.

Occam's Razor applies. The simplest explanation is that what we see is real.
