Open cycle rocket engines are garbage why do ULA and NASA still use this shit?

They generally don't, NASA's flagship engine the RS-25 is closed cycle; both ULA's Atlas 5 and Delta 4 (RD-180 and RS-28) use closed cycles as well. NASA and ULA's upper stage engine the RL-10 uses the closed expander cycle. The only American rocket company that currently uses an open combustion cycle is SpaceX for their Merlin; which is by no means the most efficient rocket engine ever made but is widely considered the most reliable engine ever made. It also has the highest thrust to weight ratio of any rocket engine ever built, so what's wrong with the open combustion cycle?

closed cycle aka just blow my shit up

This is because the ruskies weren't very good at QA. Leaving bolts inside engine piping tends to be bad
