So why aren't you learning soroban maths /sci/?

>faster than a calculator
>stimulates both sides of brain
>increases powers of visualization in the mind after you ditch the physical soroban and just go straight MENTAL

I have an autistic little "math shrine" in my kitchen, and one of the pieces is a soroban. I would like to git gud but I just haven't gotten around to it. Also the thing is delicate so I'm concerned about breaking it.

Other items on the autistic math shrine: a slide rule (which I also don't know how to use), a Connect Four board laid out in a particular draw state, A Go board with the spiral pattern from the movie π, and a classic and 2^3 mini-rubik's cube, both unscrambled.

Can it do integrals though?

Wait, your plasticity actually requires physical objects? Is your IQ only 140?

I had a soroban when I was a kid.
The "instructions" were in English by someone who thought in Japanese and I never did figure it out.
I CAN use an abacus (2 beads above the crossbar) and used all the scales on my slide rule (not just C and CI) with ease.

The "faster than a calculator" stories are left-overs from the post-WW2 occupation when a skilled soroban operator beat some GI using one of the old electromechanical (or maybe even hand-cranked) calculators. Those were marvels of mechanical ingenuity that made crunching and clanking noises as the carriage went back-and-forth like the platen of a typewriter. (You DO remember typewriters?)

They are still faster than calculators for basic operations. It takes more time to input calculator data than it does to compute on a soroban If the operator is skilled and doesn't actually use a soroban, of course.

Because I don't wanna rely on something outside my brain to do math

Because it takes ages to get good at and it's not clear I'll be able to apply it to actual computations like infinite series easily

way to limit yourself fag.
