Do I take Maths or Computer Science at university?

Let /sci/ decide...

Why CompSci, if math is the "god tier" >:D

>> No.951300

computers can do math beter than you

>> No.951303

If you want to earn money: Computer Science
If you want to troll /sci/ after you get a degree: Maths

>> No.951307

Comp. Sci. is more fun, you get to do lots of mathematics, physics (writing a 2D physics engine and seeing it work is fucking great), functional programming, you learn to solve problems the elegant way, etc.

No. No they can't. They can do computation and approximation, and then only if you know enough math to tell them how. Math hasn't been about computation for centuries.

Be pragmatic, computer science

Lies. Computer Science is purer and closer to Math than any other field. If there's anything that should be in "God Tier" besides Math, it should be CS.

>> No.951802

Dude there are like fifty different directions you can take in each of Math or CS alone. If you want to eventually get into theoretical computer science a background in math can be just as good but there are a lot more practical directions to take like networking or databases or software development or whatever.

>> No.951813

Take both.

If you succeed, you'll make more monies than if you just took one out of the two.

>> No.951811

Math is more awesome, it lets your mind think of crazy random stuff when you're bored at home late night because you're better at calculation! Yay!

Software development and databases and suchlike aren't computer science, they're computer engineering. It's an important distinction - like math versus physics.

>> No.951815

Maths is a tool for science

>> No.951820

This. Plus there's usually plenty of overlap, so it's pretty easy to double major.

>> No.951823

Dual degree in both, don't be a pussy. CS isn't far off from a math degree anyway.

>> No.951828

>>951814
In most places "Computer Engineering" refers to computer hardware engineering. "Software Engineering" would probably be more accurate but even that is kind of sketchy which is why most people just place anything to do with computers under the umbrella term "Computer Science" which is as appropriate as it gets because nothing in CS can really be considered "science" anyway.

Wrong. You're the one who doesn't know the distinction. Databases and computer programming is a branch of Computing Science.

Well, "science" as in "natural science", sure.

Wrong, Software Engineering is not a branch of Comp. Sci.

>> No.951876

Computer "science" is rarely empirical, most major advances in the field are developed and proven through mathematics.
