What's the best way to explain IQ?

IQ = the car you drive in a race
Brainlets have low IQ so it's equivalent to driving a Toyota Corolla while people with high IQ are like driving a Bugatti Veyron.
You might win with the Toyota if the Bugatti driver doesn't practice at all, but if both of them put in the same effort, you just lose for being a brainlet.

Pretty much. That or any other such analogy explains it perfectly well. IQ doesn't guarantee success but it does serve as a barrier of entry for many things.

You can also upgrade the Corolla with good parts to narrow the gap. But it'll cost you.

You cant upgrade IQ, you can only damage it. Genetics rapidly become the dominant factor in determining someone's IQ once they're no longer starving coalmine workers.

I'd say you're both driving the same car but with different engines, lower IQ being a weaker engine. In a straight line, the car with the weaker engine would lose, but when more technique is required the weaker engine could win if he has better technique.

IQ is the capacity of ones mind. The mind is very complex. It operates all the body functions. So the smarter you get the more abstract can you compute. Which in return gives you a certain complexity of wich possibilities, answers and causes and reactions truth or false you have. Which decides at what grade of sophistication you will have for a certain task or problem. It's the whole brain that weight up the variables needed to act contraditionally towards a problem, task or option you have. And it can warry from total straight forward to the most sophistocated and how much complexity you are gonna put into it. You can also agree with that, is it meaningfull, is it reason, do you need to, do you have to, what's the options, what's the gain, what's optimal, risk, common sense, success or failure, how much effort, how mich time, how much energy, where to begin and how do i proceed and move forward, how fast and is it worth it. The brain computes this within a millisecond. Some tasks takes longer than others to get onto it. E.g. a hard math problem. What color underwear to use takes shorter because it's not that hard to chose. Let's say you are thinking of what to do with your life. This can take really long time. But it saves you a minute for next time. And it should give you reason and meaning. And it influences the next tasks you are gonna do. And it eliminates a few and adds a few. But you come more prepaired to meet them. And you are more aware. Which are beneficial. Which is a good thing. So it seems the more you think the smarter you become. And from there you get what's the most clever options. So it starts with do or not do. Then cause and reactions. Then it just keeps bumping into more causes and reactions that eventually gets you where you need to, want to, have to, can do or cannot. Like a cirlcle of choises and doings. Which can benefit or cannot. From there it is the fastest route or the most sofisticated. The more you do the better you become.

Something that sociologists use to determine the success of groups.
Many people confuse this relationship, and think it directly determines success.
It gained popularity overtime, and is why /sci/ lacks any scientific discussion about anything other than psychometrics.

IQ is a way of measuring intelligence. So in your analogy, it would be the measuring devices that a car magazine uses to tell you about the race car.
