Is this why psychology is seen as a meme science? Practically anything that can happen to a person is a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Being crushed by a bus is caused by your squishy human genetics and the environment that consists of a giant machine that crushes squishy humans. Why did they think this was a worthwhile thing to say?

Yes, to neuroscientists, psychology is a just laughable form of behavioral or cognitive neuroscience. To science in general, psychology is not a science because it doesn't involve rigorous experiments with clear variables/controls.

Most autoimmune diseases are the same way. Does that mean the field of rheumatology is made up?

It's a bunch of subjective kabbalistic bullshit paired with some dubious empirical testing. You can verify some basic bitch behavioural observations, but there simply is no theory until cognitive neuroscience matures.

Which is gonna happen pretty soon, what with AI research and neurological research going hand in hand.

snipping parts out of the brain can solve any mental illness. We don't do it because it is 'unethical'.

We currently don't understand enough about what to snip without negative side effects. We'd need to understand how to rewire the brain as well.

But would you like the government having the authority to snip whatever parts of your brain it wants?

Are you deliberately trying to misconstrue stuff to fight your point?

He isn't suggesting that studying something that results from a combination of environmental and genetic factors is a meme. He is saying it's a meme if the best they can do to explain it is by saying "The cause is unknown but likely involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors", since that is obvious and not even worth saying. Also rheumatology is not /sci/ence.

So exactly like autoimmune diseases?

Also

back to high school with you

Well, they're not wrong. It just means that psychology is an infantile science that needs to grow more.
As a result, good clinicians working with psychology are always prudent and analyse a person's psyche over long periods of time. They are both researching and treating the patient using the limited knowledge and structure they have.

The etiologic cause of autoimmune diseases is not known, just like mental illness.
