That's not a hover "bike". The only bikelike thing about it is the shape of the seat being vaguely similar to a motorcycle.

That's just a small four rotor helicopter.

I mean, if you took pic related and replaced the pilot seat with a shitty motorcycle style seat, would you refer to that as a "hoverbike"?

It's mostly about raising efficiency, incorporating various forms of aerodynamic lift and keeping it stable. Rather than just give up like >>9443115 there are lots of little tricks you can try adding until you get the performance you want. Rockets used to suck too until they tricked them out with bell nozzles, guide fins and turbopumps.

Why hasn't some big company done this? They don't think it's worth their time is the short answer. Why hasn't another amateur enthusiast done this? The long answer is they have but it barely worked because they didn't have much knowledge so trialled and errored until they at least made it into ground effect so they could make a cool video. So you can't look at say Colin Furze's hoverbike and say it's a dead end; this is the same guy who made a jet engine from a toilet roll holder.

I'm also an amateur and I don't claim to be more skilled than anyone else but I've done my best to learn as much theory as possible before jumping in. So you could say that what I'm doing is more of a concept study rather than just another random shed build.

Long ramble but basically what I'm trying to say is sometimes things don't exist not becase they aren't possible but because nobody serious cares enough to try. The one time proper engineers have bothered to build a hoverbike because one country happens to be filthy rich and hungry for PR it far surpasses what everyone thought was possible thus illustrating my point.

Also microturbines cost a lot and the maintenance...

Something else that people never think of is the inherent limitations of the thermodynamic cycle. To get more efficiency you must have a higher compression ratio, but as you make a jet engine smaller that means spinning it faster. You can only spin it so fast before melting therefore small turbines have much lower efficiencies. We are now seeing these powerful microturbines that can lift people because of advances in metallurgy. The Brayton cycle isn't the most efficient of cycles to begin with so Zapata's flyboard ends up eating a ton of fuel. So in terms of weight savings it isn't much better than lugging batteries.

the power requirements of sustained jetbike use is far greater than what modern battery technology can achieve

Soviets are an inspiration man. They needed to go to the moon but didn't have the resources for big-ass rockets like the Americans so invented new technology to make rockets that were so efficient the Americans didn't believe it possible. They're a good example of doing the best with what you have insead of sitting on your ass saying "it can't be done"

Websters calls a "bike" a vehicle with two wheels tandem, handlebars for steering, a saddle seat, and pedals by which it is propelled

That thing is just a quadcopter with a seat in a middle, kys op, do it NOW NOW NOW don't think

No one calls it that though, its a "quad," a "4-Wheeler," or an ATV.

Realistically how far are we away from a breakthrough in battery technology? It seems like its a huge technological bottleneck.

The modern day quadcopter "Drone" is literally a remote controlled 4 bladed helicopter. Rotor configuration might be different, but its still a helicopter.

Very far, in fact, we dont have anything that could make those cool scifi shit a reality. Maybe the breakthrough comes from nuclear? solid state? who fucking knows?

The funny thing I have posted math pertaining to the project here in the past I just never said it was for a hoverbike project. /sci/ was never interested because it wasn't the latest dark matter meme theory, either ignoring my questions, sneering that "it's trivial" or accusing me of doing homework so I generally stopped bothering to discuss small-scale aerodynamics here.
