Non-mathematician here. This makes no sense to me, can someone enlighten?

It's a joke based on "calculus" from pajeets and liars that is undermining True Mathematics.
The sum of all positive integers is, according to them, equal to [math]-\frac{1}{12}[/math].

Umm... it actually originates from Euler and later expanded over to the complex plane by Riemann.

It's a complex function that takes an infinite series as an input and spits out a complex number as an output. The output of the series of natural numbers is the complex number -1/12 + 0i
It isn't fake, it's not made from liars, it's complex analysis.
Don't forget that the complex numbers are the only field that's algebraically closed and therefor they are the actual numbers that exist, all numbers are complex numbers. You think you have one glass of water? Nope, you have 1 + 0i glasses of water.

hello /pol/, what are you doing here?

Thats the same as saying:
You have a glass of water?
Nope, you have 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + ... + 0.99999999..... glasses of water.
You cant do that, you have to evaluate your expression to weak head normal form

It's true that it is hardly rigorous to say something as simple as 1 + 2 + 3 + ... = -1/12, and personally I find it annoying when people take this ill-defined statement too literally, however the mathematics behind this is completely well defined and understood.

I consider it a misconception that this really has anything to do with infinite series. The zeta function is an analytic continuation of a function which could be defined in terms of an infinite sum over a specific domain, trying extend beyond this domain to normalize 1 + 2 + 3 + .. is a naive formulation. Also the idea that complex numbers are the numbers that "exist" (whatever that means) follows from them being algebraically closed is bizarre.

The complex numbers are what God used to build the universe git gud scrub
