do ribcages expand? was standing at the mirror and inhaled and saw my ribs move away from each other. is this normal? i didnt feel pain from it.

Your diaphragm moves down and your chest enlarges and that pulls a partial vacuum in your chest. That's what expands your lungs. They have no muscles of their own.

That's why people with a hole in their chest can't breathe even if the lungs are OK. Can't maintain that vacuum. Chest surgery used to be almost impossible before mechanical breathing aids were invented.
