It's a shortcut.
You could technically reproduce any behavior you get through self-awareness with pure unthinking automation based behavior, but with the latter you would need to go through a ridiculously large set of possible permutations of behavior before getting to the same answer a self-aware organism could come up with through consideration of himself and others as beings with predictable habits and motivations.
