Depends on each university in the US, but at mine credits are based solely off how many hours you are in lecture per week. So 3 credits = 3 hours of lecture throughout one week, whether it be M/W/F for 60 minutes each or T/Th, etc. Some courses with recitations might be 4 or 5, but most don't past 2nd year at my uni.

I just checked occ course catalog, I can't believe it. Basic topology and exterior algebra as well!

I have been going to my cc for years, about to transfer out. I've taken discrete math, intro to abstract algebra, number theory, and seen through the partial differential equations course. And I actually have spivaks book to self study, never would have imagined a cc less than a half hour away from me was using it for a course! It's actually making my head spin a bit.

By any chance, do you know what text is used for the honors multivariable calculus and honors linear algebra+ differential equations courses?

How it works is you have a 4 unit course which is the non honors class, then a 1 unit course additionally with the honors material.

For the linear algebra and differential equations, I had it with the same guy who teaches the tensors course. He used 2 texts that he wrote himself (1 on general topology, the other on exterior algebra). For multivariable calculus, I took it with a different guy. He used schaums outline on differential geometry.

I go to East Los Angeles college. Intro to Abstract Algebra was offered in Winter of 2016 and this just past summer 2017, it's a five week course and is offered around once a year. The professor just kind of lectures straight from the text (Gilbert, Elements of Modern Algebra, available as PDF online if you're curious) though, and it was a very informal course.

We were able to cover the basic stuff, subgroups, cyclic groups, normal and quotient groups, isomorphism theorems, cayleys theorem, sylow theorems, etc. In the last week or so we started on ring theory, at ideals and fields. It was a good experience!

Trimester student here. This winter I've got:
>Data Analysis and Statistical Software — major requirement, also a prereq for the machine learning courses I want to take in grad school.
>Object-Oriented Software Development — major requirement.
>Honors """Debating Capitalism""" — honors program requirement.
>The Craft of Fiction Writing — elective, potential minor.
My university recommends a 2/2 split between major and gen-ed/elective courses. Actually looking forward to everything, even the honors meme class. The professor allegedly throws parties with free booze because "anarchist praxis," and refuses to give students any grade below a B, also because "anarchist praxis."
