the speed of light is definitely not a meme. It isn't just the speed that light happens to go, light goes that fast because that is the speed that causality can propagate through spacetime
Nothing's stopping us from warping space to travel seemingly quicker than that, though.
Also, if you don't care about coming back, time dilation means you could go anywhere you want within your lifetime by traveling at high percentages of the lightspeed.

It's not "light" that has a speed limit, its "causality". We will explore the galaxy, but not with FTL. Once people have effectively unlimited lifespans they won't worry that it takes hundreds of years to get anywhere, it only seems insurmountable to us because of our shirt lifespans. If you'd shown a caveman a photo of Earth from space, he might say "We'll never see 99% of this if the walking speed meme is true. What's the point?"

It is only 100,000 lightyears across. Universe is billions of years old. Plenty of time to colonize the galaxy a hundred times over even with sublight speeds.
