Freud isn't really taken seriously in contemporary psych departments I gather, but he provided one of the first thorough descriptions of narcisstic personality, and was pivotal in inspiring scientific research on personality in general. When I read his general introduction to psychoanalysis I remember thinking that this dude understands people pretty well, and finding it useful on a personal level.

Anyone who takes chopra seriously probably doesn't give a shit about falsifiability and other scientific standards to begin with.

McKenna has some crazy ideas about the origins of language and who's to say proto humans didn't get fucked up and transcend their cave existence from time to time. But again, I doubt anyone's going to confuse him with a legitimate researcher in the positivist tradition, considering the dude is mostly inspired by taking shrooms lol.

I think part of the problem is that psych experiments present some of the most difficult conditions for doing statistical analysis (because of the immense variability in subjects, experimental stimuli, etc). But at the same time, people who study psychology are some of the most mathematically retarded (not joking).
