He's considered by many to be the greatest theoretical physicist alive, he's so good he won a Field's medal as his work had that much of an impact on the world of theoretical physics and mathematics. He is primarily a string theorist but even if you discount all of those his accomplishments outside of the field would still put him into the upper echelon of theoreticians.
