How bad are F on your transcript if you're applying to a University?

Depends on all kinds of things. Institutions will overlook F's if you have otherwise good grades, interesting extracurriculars, a strong essay or (if you're older) a solid work history.

If you're applying to grad school it doesn't matter that much unless it's in your major and you don't have strong recommendations.

But yeah it's pretty bad.
