Galois invented abstract algebra before dyind in a duel at age 20.

Mazur's contribution to the solution of Fermat's last theorem was more substantial than that of Wiles. He takes all credits and cries on tv.

pleb. Wiles is a stupid cunt that did NOT solve Fermat's last theorem, he just started working on it when it was already practically solved, came up with the completely wrong answer, and let Richard Taylor find the real solution while taking all the credit. Talentless hack.

Srinivasa Ramanujan would have solved Fermat's Last Theorem easily had he not died of illness. Wiles got lucky that random chance had allowed the world around the theorem to progress to such a level where any retard could have solved it.

So why didn't anyone solve it before him?

Random chance. Wiles happened to be interested in elliptic curves, he was in the right moment at the right time.

Pure random luck that nobody stumbled upon it before him.

Sounds like quite the hypothetical, especially considering how many people work in elliptic curves.

>Gauss or Tao?
Gauss by far. The difference is so large comparing them is retarded.
>Riemann or Serre?
Serre.
>Galois or Wiles?
Galois.
>Dedekind or Jacobson
Even.
>Cauchy or Ahlfors?
Cauchy, by far.
>Abel or Floer?
Abel.
>Weierstrass or Nirenberg?
Weierstrass.

I'm a math undergrad and slowly coming to the conclusion that I don't actually like math. I got in because I loved the almost recreational topics like graph theory, number theory, 2D and 3D geometry. I know I'm wrong but I just feel like a lot of what mathematicians actually do, like category theory and metamathematics is useless wankery. Any other brainlets feel that way? I'd say I'm only interested in what I can actually see but then again I fucking hate physics.

All the older ones better, mathematicians at what they used to be. Much more complex work today makes it more difficult desu. Only person today that could be compared to those oldies are Perelman and ofcourse pic related, solved the riemann hypothesis and hodge conjecture and is now working on P = NP

I know how you feel. I used to think non-euclidean geometries and stuff were important and worth knowing but honestly, who gives a crap? (not even being ironic here, I get that it's interesting for mathematicians but come on)
That and excessive formalism. It's not even that it's hard, it's just a testament to the levels of autism this field has achieved.
