No surprise since it's apparently consists mostly of playing with office supplies until you "invent" something

Where does this meme come from? the US? Is it THAT bad in America? The only unemployed physicists I know are the one's that did Astro shit, the rest of us got jobs and postdoc offers shoved like dicks in our faces. It was much harder for us to decide which one to pick than for the other who just moved home to their parent's basements ..

Turkroach here. I think it's an American meme. Applied physics graduates make shit ton of money over here.

In what kind of jobs? Research? Pff.

I can speak only for Turkey aka Kebabistan. Defense industry (mostly for the parts requiring knowledge in magnetism and also telecommunication), semiconductors, medical equipment (design, production, maintanence etc.), and obviously programming.

But, in general, applied physics is quite hard in Turkish education system because government still couldn't manage to fuck it up. So, if you graduate from that, it means you are intelligent and /or hardworking person. So, companies rather hire physicists and teach them the job than hiring an engineer with degree from an average university.

Research is a boring job with stupid people that takes too much time, not including the homework you get. BCS make more money, have easier jobs, spend less time on work, and don't have homework (unless they work from home, which is also a possibility). Even if you chose Physics just for the sake of learning, you could pretty much just gone to a library instead. So let's face it, a Physics degree is about as worthy as toilet paper.
