Imagine yourself being born in west Africa today. What can you offer a businessman in Europe or the United States, the places that have money, which he cannot get anywhere else? Who in hell's name will invest in you?

Africa's resources were long ago taken and divided up among foreign powers. The human labor resource is also offered in other poor regions such as South America and Southeast Asia so you can't undersell them and if you do your situation will not improve.

Without capital how will you improve your life? You can't just take a piece of land and start cultivating it, you don't own it and nobody will sell it to you. You can't simply start a business, you have no resources and nobody will loan you anything.

Essentially, this is the arguments presented in "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond.

I've read the book and found it interesting, but he wrote as if he had an agenda to present every variation of human as utter and completely equal in all capacities. Political ideologies/agendas and empirical science is hardly a good match.

In Africa the weather can change rapidly, areas that were fertile before dry up and ones that were unlivable suddenly become fertile. Combine this with the lack of a good storage food and you have a situation where you can't try new things because if you fail your entire tribe dies

Urbanization rate though is on the rise and soon they will hit the "critical" 50% urbanization rate. After hitting that mark we will soon see functioning african state and quickly growing economies.
