Because real science has become so abstract that the average populace has just given up. You tell somebody the gist of quantum mechanics and they accept it, tell them of the far reaching implications and they gloss over. The only way to capture the attention of the masses is to dumb science down to a point where people feel like they understand it when really it's just appealing to their own sense how things should be.
