What's the point of studying Pure Mathematics over Applied?
Pure seems like something I would want to do and pursue a PHD in but it seems that I wouldn't be able to get a job in anything other than academia which is never guaranteed.

Nothing's stopping you from learning the applied stuff and getting a job outside of academia. You could also learn to program, there's a shit-ton of high paying code monkey jobs if nothing else works out.

Someone who has studied pure maths can do applied maths, but someone who has studied only applied maths cannot do pure maths.

Aren't the applied way more proficient and know a more about it

because applied math is just applying pure math... lmao OP is a retard

You won't get a job in either unless you have a PhD
You could probably land a job as a glorified accountant with a masters in either discipline, but don't expect to do anything aside from Excel spreadsheets all day

If your only reason for attending university is because you want a job then you shouldn't do pure math. You arguably shouldn't even do applied math. Instead you should do some form of engineering.

If you disagree with this then you're agreeing that there are other reasons for attending university and should therefore be able to understand why others would go into pure math despite having a poor job outlook.

Another thing to consider is that many people double major and thereby use the pure math to enhance another degree.

Well what I would love to do is pure math and do research and shit all day but it seems unreasonable to attain that. That's why I look at applied math and think that there's less chance of me getting the degree and having no work.
