freshman physics major here. What do you guys think about theoretical physics?

pretty cool, over time I've gained much respect for mathematical physics

>muh string theory

It's literally indistinguishable from religion.

There's nothing wrong with religion, it's just not science.

Shit like String Theory may be of questionable physical relevance, but it is mathematically rigorous and is thus logically self-consistent. I would not say the same holds for religion.

>mathematically rigorous

Never mind string theory, If you even studied quantum mechanics to the point you ran into renormalization, looked at it, and thought anything besides how laughable of a religion it literally is, then I don't know what to say.

>Hey, everything sums to infinities
>Herp derp, you can just cancel out some infinities
>Derp herp, shit still sums to various infinities
>Durr, just ignore those for some reason

Yes, rigorous indeed

While what you encounter in a typical QFT course is not phrased in a rigorous manner, there is some pretty decent mathematics behind RG flow.

Think flows on moduli spaces.

Its what inspires people to become physicists
