Do you feel that a field is illegitimate if it requires a large amount of axioms to actually function? What's your cut off point?

Mostly I am concerned about predictive power.

Usually, the results produced from fields that require large amounts of axioms to function are not very predictive or generalizable.

I would not call these fields illegitimate. I might use the words useless and uninteresting instead.

It's not a case of either-or, axiomatic systems such as math and language can be as legitimate as empirical studies.
