Imagine you own a factory. All the machines in your factory have to be built from scratch in a process that takes, let's say, 18 years. Over the past half century your machine building has fallen off, but it was fine at the time because you had a large number of functional machines. Now though, those machines are starting to wear out and there soon won't be enough newer machines to pick up the slack.

Meanwhile, a factory down the road has just gone bust and they're handing out all their relatively new machines completely for free. In exchange for all this, you have free machines with long working lives ahead generating you wealth which you can then use to buy more machines, and keep your current ones in service.

The main problem is interfacing the new machines with the ones you built yourself. Your most recent machines have no problems working alongside the imported ones - being about the same age they have similar requirements and ideal conditions, with looser tolerances and more flexibility all around. However, your old machines do not like the new ones at all. The slightly different vibrations from the new ones seem to rattle bolts loose all throughout your older sections, which are already struggling with the demands of assembly lines they weren't built for. The question is: do you throw out all the new ones and stop accepting any more for free, or try to loosen up the tolerances of your older ones?

Either way, a summary glance will tell you that radical Islam is obviously and completely incompatible with liberal values, i.e. egalitarianism and personal freedom. But fundamentalist Christianity is equally as incompatible (mainly because it focuses on the old testament, completely missing the part where that one guy died so that everyone could have their sins forgiven and stop having to be stoned for talking back to their parents), and after being defanged into its current mostly harmless, primarily cosmetic form it manages to get along with modern society, more or less. Likewise, once all the angry men in the desert die off and the main muslims left are the slightly overweight girls that wear hijabs and have tumblrs about baking and Doctor Who, Islam will in turn become an ineffectual set-dressing for a few groups' lives - and in the mean time, the people that believe in it don't stop being human or having understandable motives.
