I find it much more tedious to start bare metal and build up from the foundations, but that I learn a crap tone more than my peers.

How many of you go with the bare bones up approach?

I do. It's faster and easier. The only drawback is that most textbooks are aimed at brainlets who can only understand by extrapolating from examples so you're often better off looking up lecture notes and arxiv papers than dealing with that shit.
