High School teacher here.

I think it starts as soon as the students hit high school where their hormones are running wild. Most teenagers are generally too busy to give a fuck about maths and science, and obviously don't find the classes interesting compared to something like PE or home ec.

The fact that maths has virtually no hands on activities to do with it, makes it boring as fuck to learn. Not to mention how poorly written text books are. So I can understand students when they say that they hate mathematics, even though I majored in it at university.

Science, is a bit different because you get the change with laboratory work to do hands on activities. However students are going to engage with the subject for entirely different reasons. Some students will engage because they want good grades and to impress their parents with the difficult subject that they're studying. Others will study it because they know that their university course in the future requires some science.

Boys will study it because they're nerds and feel like they don't belong in PE and think of home ec as a girls subject, etc. Girls think of biology as icky, chemistry as potions, and physics as too technical, and are quickly to give up in class time when they become stuck on a problem and then gossip to their friends about whatever the fuck they did on the weekend. Boys however, will just to solve the problem.

Aside from the general differences in the sexes and their interests. Most students simply don't care about school and would rather rebel, where maths and science as subjects are probably the heaviest lecture-style classes that you can be in as a high school student.

Even now, it's 2016 and going to 2017 soon... In high schools now... There are a fuck ton of subjects that we didn't have back in the early 2000's. Why would any student want to do maths? This issue as to why girls don't study maths and science as much as boys simply can't be reduced.

Fathers spent less time with offspring, if at all, than women did so there was no nagging evolutionary need for male emotional ability.

-STEM jobs are more lucrative, and males feel a greater pressure (again due to evolution) to provide resources for spouses/offspring. Men are more likely to forgo personal interest in favor of a career that generates more revenue. Women are more likely to pursue something they actually want to and their career path is less contingent on earnings.

According to intelligence distribution curves, the ratio of geniuses is about 10:1 male/female; there are also more male retards than female retards. Women tend to cluster in the average IQ range, but male examples dominate the "extremes". If I were to speculate, I'd say that men are like this because the greater variability in IQ range is more genetically "risky", while the female lack of variability is more of a risk-averse strategy for passing on one's genes. It makes sense considering how either sex "wins" at life and produces offspring; a woman has to give birth to a live infant, a man has to successfully impregnate a woman.

Frankly, I don't think there's a problem if the ratio is skewed towards men in STEM fields. It should be expected that there'll be one woman worth listening to for every 5-10 men worth listening to.

What actually bothers me is making sure the system is set up in such a way that the best of humanity's minds are able to succeed and excel. It's obvious enough in this thread alone that male autists are terrible at dealing with women in general, let alone a woman of some value to humankind. I'd like it if they could be less bitter about the whole thing and take women in their fields on a case-by-case basis; it should be obvious which ones have merit and which don't. I don't care about making STEM a welcoming environment for the "average" woman, but at the very least it shouldn't be hostile to the ones who deserve to be there.

IQ has almost nothing to do with most STEM.
It's behavioral. Some of it cultural, but most of it probably natural.
IMO it comes down to what they consider "fun" or "interesting" instead of what is considered hard.
There's nothing IQ taxing about a bachelors in any STEM field.

Someone with 105 IQ could be a successful engineer.
