What purpose does the """study""" of numbers serve anymore? The important functions and formulas have been long discovered and now it seems like mathmemeticians are only sitting around doing increasingly complex sudoku puzzles that don't do anything.

No other field is like this.

Biology
>constantly picking away at life's unknown puzzles
Engineering
>pushing the envelope of technological advancements
Math
>look guys I found a way to color every country on a map a different color without them touching xDD
>WOAH dude like, how can you make a sphere into a donut without punching a hole in it?? MIND BLOWN xDD

It's time we start pairing math majors with english majors in terms of relative uselessness.

But those are the academia mathematicians. Topology was first conceived to tackle very real and important problema but after it was settled many mathematicians just started going crazy on it.
Why?
Because academia allows it. You just have to publish to keep getting that money. It doesn't matter what you publish.

People who research on real money like NSF grants or in industry do much more practical work.

Seriously, go to the NSF's website and search their funded pure math projects. It is literally number theory and algebra for cryptography and other shit.

On the industry side I can speak a little more. I have a bachelors degree in mathematics and I work for banks and other financial institutions. My research is almost entirely computational. Calculate some stats, optimize algorithms, develop new algorithms, etc.

The study of numbers is pretty much alive.

hes right. Math is fucking useless nowadays. Only circlejerking autists without real contact to the 21st century, might aswell quit your jobs and off yourself now

So is cartography. Doesn't mean it's still worthwhile.
