Euclid wasn't really original, he did alot to bring all kinds of work together but the Elements doesn't have alot of his originality

In all fairness Serre or Atiyah would probably be better candidates for 20th century Gauss than Grothendieck.
Grothendieck wasn't really interested in solving problems (he said so himself), but rather in finding the most appropriate "language" for problems to be expressed in.

Grothendieck couldn't have been a twentieth century Gauss, his interests were largely concentrated in the recondite niceties of algebraic geometry and related fields.

Now this will sound like a meme, but von Neumann was more of a Gaussian figure, being a problem solver, a theoretician, a pure and applied mathematician at various stages, Indeed, I would say von Neumann almost certainly possessed a more full picture of mathematics as it stood in his own time.

If you study Algebraic Geometry enough, you come to realize how remarkable Grothendicks work is. It's like if some alien came and taught us some mathematics from the future type shit.

Also it's not well known, but when Grothendick was memeing around german camps as a teenager or some shit he independently discovered measure theory before he realized lebesgue had already done it.
