More likely than not you will be designing a heart valve that is marginally safer than the current model, or a knee replacement, or something equally mundane.

this. the cool thing about EE and CompE is that you can make basically anything you want (once you have the knowledge). civils or chemicals, etc, can't actually make anything on their own as home projects. even mechanicals can't, because of the need for precise machining of parts etc. you can buy a breadboard and components for really cheap.

I didn't start helping with research until 4th year(a little late). Everybody who started earlier basically does menial labor. Focus on getting A+'s. Then professor, or more realistically their grad students or postdocs working under them, will have things that you can handle. I actually work in a group that takes a long time to do anything so it's hard for them to give me anything worthwhile to do when projects last for years. But I do it anyway (at my own pace) because I want the experience on my resume and applications. That being said, ask if you can work for free or just shadow to learn more about what they do. Look for an experimentalist group as that's easier to to have a pleb like you contribute. Also, ask about books you can study so that you can sound more intelligable and interested than "hey, study physics that was developed 200 years ago, can you give me a free ride?" Instead, say "Hey! I get good grades because I love this shit! I also think (subject from chapter 7 of book about the general field of their research) is super interesting! I'd love to learn more, can you recommend any resources? Also, I saw you published about (last chapter of different book you read). That was neat-o! Is there any way I can shadow you or a post-doc of yours to learn about what sick shit you guys are doing next???"

Also learn how to program. Every Physicist (and probably scientist) should know how to program at an acceptable level.
