Okay /sci/, in your opinion, if you had to choose, what is the most important field of science to study for the progression and well being of the human race?

I know right. Everything we are, and everything we do will always be completely inconsequential to the universe.

I'd say Genetic Engineering, as the viability of pretty much everything else depends on it (be it localized or traveling among the stars, or what not.)

Only downside being that it could seriously backfire.

I suppose SAI would be another path, as it'd handle the genetic engineering problems for you...

But of course, that'd be even more likely to backfire.

Seeing as how both are nearly inevitable, however, what might be most important, is working out a philosophy for designing/applying them in such a way as they don't backfire, and making sure that the whole world self-propagates that philosophy, so some rogue nation doesn't kill us all.

So, as much as I'd really hate to say this, in the end, the most important "science" is: Sociology (and/or Political Science).

I know, I know... The truth hurts.

I'd say Computer Science. It's pretty integral to the world, especially machine learning. Machine learning is already applied to so many different things, it will eventually get to the point of being integral to everything we make.

However for our well-being, it would be genetic engineering. Though machine learning will likely be used, even dependent on, in genetic engineering.

Molecular Biology / Genetic Engineering. As previous replies have stated, society is going to become increasingly dependent on us controlling our genes, and demand for these fields are going to explode. I personally am an agricultural geneticist, and I've witnessed an incredible increase in demand in the few years I've been involved. With issues such as climate change and air pollution killing off billions in crops each year, the world is going to have no choice but to depend completely on GMO crops in 50 years or so I would guess.

Automation - need more cheaper

Surveillance - need more surveillance tech in the hands of the general public. Our public officials are up to some pretty shady shit.

Ya do realize that works both ways?

You could pass a law that all federal politicians and police have to wear a wifi cam 24/7, have all internal business fully recorded by office cams, and make it criminal to obscure them, and you'd be fine with the current technology, if that's really what you want. Surveillance technology as it is, if anything, is already overkill.
