I kind of want to go into research, but I know I'm too stupid for that. Also even in my field (physics) research is incredibly dependent on social connections. I suck even worse there.

I'm really not sure what kind of jobs you can even get as a physicist, I heard quite some horror stories. I hope it's just not call center or McDonalds. That would break my mom's heart I believe.

Obviously he didn't mean to imply that math majors can't get jobs.

Working at Taco Bell is a job.

If I could choose, I'd choose research. I probably can't, so welfare for the unemployed it most likely is. I"m already pretty reclusive. I can't wait to become a hermit!

I got a job as a software-dev/programmer/code-monkey making below-average salary for an insurance company (lots of very good benefits though, which I have never had before in my life). I am poor and my family is poor, so it is very tempting to take the job to pay off my 15k debts and help my family.

The problem is I really want to get my PhD in applied math. I did a research internship at the school I wanted to get my PhD at and the academic environment there seemed very good. My lifetime goal is to become a professor who does research and teaches at a university (very hard I know, but I do not care too much the quality of the university), or to work in industry doing engineering software development.

Do I put my dreams on hold to get some $$$? I am tired of living with my parents and with either choice I would finally be moving out, and both locations seem interesting to live in. I am afraid if I work for a year or two, I will lose the (very little) mathematical talent that I have (I go to a poor/unranked close-to-home state university where I am by far the best student in the math department, which isn't saying much considering I'm a retarded 4chan memer who wastes a lot of time).
