Mathematics is typically not the subject which detracts from a deistic faith because it typically posts a postulate and serves to prove it.

In this way, most math can be done outside of the bounds of real-life application, though obviously it can and does. Mathematics, however; doesn't necessarily need it to apply to anything, per se. Simply because there is one interesting solution in real life, for example, does not mean there are not many to the mathematician.

He also did physics and applied maths, however. Honestly, it's hard to really just pull him down after all of his great achievements just because of a belief in God. First and foremost; the obvious reasoning is that he made the contributions regardless of anything. Second, we don't have the man in front of us to question him on his beliefs or how steadfast he was to them.

Though it wasn't really that long ago, things were fairly different back then. Dissidence in the academic community wasn't very well liked and unfortunately that meant a mandatory Christian faith for many that wanted to even think of holding a university position or get paid for their work.
