How did the ancients know that planets were significant?

Anyone can understand the sun and moon obviously but if you're a Bronze Age dude why are you going to gaze in the night sky and realize that Mars/Venus/Jupiter/Saturn are a big fucking deal compared to the other million pinpricks of light?
